About Hume Chess Academy
Hume Chess Academy is led by Daniel Lacey, a Melbourne‑based chess coach and registered teacher with a strong background in education, curriculum design and inclusive learning. The Academy was created to provide high‑quality, structured chess instruction that supports learners of all ages to build confidence, strategic thinking and a genuine love of the game.
Chess Background
Daniel’s connection to chess began in childhood through school holiday chess programs and family games, before being reignited later in life during the global resurgence of interest in chess. Over the past four years, he has competed regularly in a range of competitive formats, including FIDE‑rated classical tournaments at the Melbourne Chess Club.
Daniel holds an official FIDE Classical rating (peak 1452) and has extensive online playing experience through Chess.com, with peak ratings of 1672 (Daily/Correspondence) and 1167 (Rapid). His coaching approach emphasises practical game understanding, pattern recognition, calculation, and reflective analysis, helping students translate learning directly into confident over‑the‑board play.
Teaching & Educational Expertise
Daniel is a fully qualified Victorian teacher, holding a Master of Teaching from Monash University and current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration. He brings over a decade of experience designing and facilitating learning across school, community and not‑for‑profit settings.
Current Coaching & Teaching Practice
Alongside leading and running Hume Chess Academy, Daniel currently works as a chess coach with Chess for Schools, where he has been teaching for over a year. Through this role, he has provided direct chess instruction to more than 100 students, supporting measurable improvement in game understanding, confidence and competitive performance. This work spans structured group programs and individualised coaching, requiring strong behaviour management, differentiation and the ability to engage learners with a wide range of abilities and motivations.
In parallel with his specialist chess coaching, Daniel maintains active formal teaching practice as a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) at Hume Anglican Grammar. This ongoing work within an established school environment ensures his teaching practice remains current, curriculum‑aligned and grounded in best‑practice classroom pedagogy. Together, these roles reinforce Daniel’s authority not only as a successful chess coach, but as a highly capable and experienced educator operating across both specialist and formal educational settings.
From 2020–2022, Daniel worked as a secondary school teacher within the Victorian government system, delivering curriculum‑aligned programs using inclusive, differentiated and evidence‑based teaching practices. His experience spans whole‑class instruction, small group coaching, individual lessons and senior pathway programs, with a strong focus on growth mindset, student wellbeing and clear learning progression.
In addition to formal schooling, one‑on‑one coaching and group workshops, Daniel also has experience in adult community education programs. His work as a Visitor Experience Officer at Edgar’s Mission Farm Animal Sanctuary further strengthened his ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, engage learners of all ages, and create safe, supportive learning environments for both children and adults.
